New Canaan Caffeine & Carburetors

This Sunday I took 26359 to the regular ‘Caffeine & Carburetors’ meetup in New Canaan, Connecticut. I did not really know what to expect as I had only visited previously as a spectator. As I turned off the Merritt Parkway, I dropped in line behind a gorgeous silver 250 SWB and simply followed it along Old Stamford Road and onto Park Street towards town. After all, the SWB’s driver seemed to know where he or she was going.

As we approached the center of New Canaan, an official directed the SWB and myself left on to Pine Street which acts as the main location for the Caffeine & Carburetors show cars. The true epicenter of the event is Zumbach’s coffee shop at the end of Pine Street where the rarest of the displayed vehicles can usually be found. Zumbach’s is owned by Doug Zumbach, who has been organizing the Caffeine & Carburetors event since 1995 when it was just a handful of car enthusiasts meeting up before a drive.

Ferrari 250 SWB in New Canaan
My short term travelling companion

My 250-engined companion and I drove slowly down Pine Street between the spectators milling around getting ever closer to Zumbach’s. Just as I was wondering what would happen next, a lady in an official vest called out to me through my open window.

“That’s as far as YOU go”

She was pointing to a space on the left, below some trees half way down Pine Street. The 250 SWB continued on down the street unhindered but I was left in no uncertain terms that I had reached my destination. Clearly, there was a hierarchy at this car show and my 308 ranked around half way and clearly lower than a 250 SWB. It all made perfect sense to me.

“Thank you.”

I replied with a smile.
