Instrument Gauge Renovation

The gauges on my instrument panel were a little dirty so I decided to remove them, disassemble and clean them. The smaller ones also paper gaskets that had shrunk and were now visible at the side of the gauges.

All of the gauges functioned correctly, so the plan was just to remove the glass and clean everything. Each gauge comprises a white plastic ‘cup’ containing the dial and mechanism behind. There are holes at the closed end for wires and bulbs, while the open end is covered with a circle of glass and black bezel which are held in place with a crimped metal ring.

Disassembling is slow, delicate work with a knife unless you have the correct uncrimping tool, which I do not. Once open the glass was cleaned inside and out with regular glass cleaner. The paper dust gaskets were removed on most since they had shrunk and distorted. The inside was dusted with one of the compressed air computer dusters before reassembly.
